NILPHAMARI, July 27: Harvesting of jute has started in Nilphamari district and is going on in full swing.

The farmers are in a hurry to do so as late harvesting of jute would culminate in late planting of Aman paddy in the same land.

Cultivation of jute has decreased substantially in the district due to increase in the cultivation of Boro paddy.

Some farmers still cultivate the traditional golden fibre as a cash crop.

DAE sources said this year's target of jute cultivation in the district is in 12770 hectares of land out of which Tossa variety cultivated in 10939 hectares of land and local variety in 1831 hectares of land.

Sources said growth of jute plants this year is satisfactory and the farmers are expecting a cherished production.

However the cultivators are worried over rotting problem of jute plants as there is a shortage of water bodies, ditches and canals in the district.

DAE sources said necessary steps were taken to ensure supply of adequate quantity of improved  quality seeds, fertilisers, insecticides and other agro-inputs to the growers in due time.

The growers were given necessary training on cultivation of jute.
