High jute price brings cheer to Gopalganj farmers

GOPALGANJ, Oct 09: The jute farmers of the district are become benefitting from their newly harvested jute to selling at a high price in local markets this year.

It jute farming is comparatively below earlier year but jute quality is better this year, as a result jute farmers excepting a high price from their jute production, growers said.

Sources said one local bighas of jute (52 decimal) of land expending cost Tk 25,000 but farmers got 14 to 15 maunds of jute from one local bigha which markets price is Tk 48,000.

One maund of jute is being selling at the rate of Tk 32,000 to Tk 34,000. But production cost about Tk 1,700 only, growers said.

According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Gopa-lganj, a total of 23,801 hectares of land have been brought under jute cultivation this year.

The probable production target at 51,702 tonnes and about 1,254,000 farmers involved this farming, sources said.

Hamid Mollah, a jute farmer of Chandradighalia village under Sadar upazila in the district, said if the jute farming is below due to shortage of rain proper time.

But, growers got good and quality full jute this year, as a result, farmers go high price from their jute produce, he added.

Enayet Mollah, a local jute trader of Tala Bazar under Gopalganj Sadar upazila in the district said, current jute price is high and farmers are more happy because they getting lucrative price from their jute produce this year.

Hasan Biswas, a jute farmer of village Boalia under Sadar upazila in the district, said the cultivation of jute is below farming this year.

But production quality is good, as a result he getting a high price from jute produce besides growers in this region more benefited from jute farming this year, he added.

Abdul Kadir Sarder, deputy director (agriculture) in Gopalganj, told the FE that jute farmers under five upazilas in the district are becoming more benefitted from their jute produce this year and they are getting high price from their newly harvested jute and farmer in this region highly glad for above price of jute this current year, he added.
