According to the local Fisheries Department, around 7,000 small, middle and big waterbodies are used in producing different fish species across the district. The sector is flouring fast in the area, he added.
"I cultivate fish in five big ponds taking lease from the government at Tk 1, 50,000 for a year. I have attained self-reliance from indigenous fish farming," said farmer Abdul Mannan of Adamdighi upazila.
Each maund of big fishes is being sold at Tk 8,000 and small and middle at Tk 6000 to Tk 6500 in the retail market, while the wholesale rate is Tk 7,000 to Tk 5,000.
The prices of indigenous fishes like, Shing and Pabda are sold at Tk 1,40,000 to Tk 1,50,000 per maund across the district.
