High output delights chilli cultivators

PANCHAGARH, May 02 (BSS): Chilli farmers of the district are happy over a bumper production this season. They are also delighted as they are getting fair prices of their produce.
Last year the chilli farmers incurred a massive loss, but this year they gains profit by cultivating green chilli.
Green chilli is being sold at Tk 550 to Tk 600 per maund in the local market. A farmer can produce at least 30 maunds of chilli from one bigha of land.
Farmer Susil Kumar of Prundipara village said that he had cultivated chilli on three bighas of land. Already he has made a profit of Tk 40,000 from the sale. He is expecting to earn Tk 15,000 more from the vegetable.
Traders from different parts of the country come here to buy chilli and supply to different places including Dhaka.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Panchagarh, sources said 5,000 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of green chilli this year.
Deputy Director of DAE Panchagarh Samsul Huque said the department has provided all necessary support to the chilli growers.
