KHULNA, Dec 31: High production cost is the big concern for the 0.6 million Boro cultivators of the four southern districts this season.
Prices of seed, electricity and labourers have been increased. Production cost of an acre of land stands at Tk 55,000 during the current season.
DAE sources said 0.22 million hectares of land have been brought under the farming in Khulna, Bagerhat, Satkhira and Narail districts.
According to the sources from the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC), the price of high yielding Boro seed was Tk 50 to Tk 58 per kg and BR-50 seed Tk 65 to Tk 70 per kg.
Deputy Director of BADC Md Liaquat Ali said 1,770 tonnes of seed were supplied in Satkhira, Khulna and Bagerhat districts.
Deputy director of DAE Mohammad Abdul Latif said 83 per cent seedbed has so far been completed.
Associate professor of the Agro Technology Discipline of Khulna University Matiul Islam said Boro cultivation is not profitable in the region. Farmers grow the crop amid the risk of natural disasters.
He urged the cultivators to follow the instruction of the DAE officials to get better yield.
