High yielding BRRI Dhan-50 cultivation expanding

MAGURA, May 14: Cultivation of BRRI Dhan-50 is gaining popularity in Akkupur village under Magura Sadar.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said Kataribhoge was the popular paddy variety among the growers. A good number of cultivators used to grow the paddy on a vast tract of land.

But the scenario has changed now. High yielding BRRI Dhan-50 took the place. The variety is much similar to Kataribhoge.

Per bigha Kataribhoge production is around 12 maunds while BRRI Dhan-50 is around 25 maunds.

A total of 65 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of BRRI-50 in Akkapur village this season with the production target of 260 tonnes of rice.

Farmer Kutubuddin said cultivation of BRRI Dhan-50 is profitable. It is being sold at Tk 2,000 to Tk 2,200 per maund while, Boro at Tk 850.

Trader Badrul Hossein, "We sell BRRI-50 paddy at Tk 75 per kg, while Boro at Tk 50 per kg."

Magura DAE official Gobinda Kumar Zoarder said growers are expecting a bumper production of BRRI Dhan-50 this season.

Farmers should expand the farming of the variety to boost paddy production, the official added.
