Holistic approach for sound ecosystem emphasised

RAJSHAHI, June 8 (BSS): Speakers at a participatory discussion in Rajshahi Monday have underscored the need for holistic approach for sound and healthy ecosystem relating to all sectors so that the existing biodiversity and other living beings could be protected from all threats particularly the adverse impact of climate change.
They viewed adverse impact of climate change has started posing a serious threat to the farming sector alongside overall living and livelihood condition in vast barind tract comprising the districts of Rajshahi, Naogaon and Chapainawabganj.
The observation came at a workshop styled "Country Investment Plan (CIP)- EFCC Consultation" held at Nanking Darbar Hall. Ministry of Environment and Forest organised the workshop in association with its project titled "Strengthening the Environment, Forestry and Climate Change Capacities of Environment and Forest and its Agencies".
Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations and USAID jointly supported the event. More than 150 officials representing various government and non-government organisations concerned and other stakeholders attended the workshop and actively participated in its group discussions.
Commissioner of Rajshahi division Helaluddin Ahmed addressed the opening session as chief guest while Deputy Commissioner Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury and FAO Representative Mike Robson spoke as special guests with Abdul Mabud, Conservator of Forest, in the chair.
During his keynote presentation, Dr Shahin Yakub, International Consultant of FAO, gave an overview of the workshop while Deputy Chief of the ministry Shamshur Rahman Khan welcomed the participants.
The adverse situation caused by the climate change has directly been making negative impact on the forestry, biodiversity, ecosystem, water, sanitation, overall public health and sustainable livelihood in the region, said the chief guest.
