RAJSHAHI, Jun 23 (BSS): Speakers at a view-sharing meeting have unequivocally called for a comprehensive plan of action to check human trafficking that also needs collective efforts of judges, lawyers, law-enforcers and others concerned.

They also stressed on a need of proper enforcement of the existing laws to address the problem. There should also be proper and effective measures of rehabilitation of the trafficked victims alongside their family integration, they added.

The observations came at a roundtable discussion titled "Action for Combating Trafficking in Persons" held at Top That Chinese Restaurant in Rajshahi metropolis yesterday evening.

Sachetan, a rights-based development organization, organized the programme in association with USAID and Winrock International.

With Hasinul Islam Chunnu, Executive Director of Sachetan, in the chair, BGB Ops Officer Major Kamrul Hassan, Special Public Prosecutors for Tribunal against Women and Children Repression Syeda Morjina Begum and Ismat Ara, Assistant Superintendent of Police Mainul Haque, Assistant Judge Atiqus Samad, Police Sub Inspector Masuda Mustari, Dr Alim Uddin and Shatil Siraj of Rajshahi University and journalist Akbarul Hassan Millat, among others, spoke on the occasion.

The discussants stressed the need for a social movement to free the society from the menace. Trafficking in human beings, especially women and children, is increasing alarmingly in the country due to poverty, illiteracy and limitations in the existing laws, they added.

The speakers mentioned that poverty, illiteracy, ignorance, drug-addiction and cross-border trade have so far been identified as the main reasons behind the trafficking of women and children.

Besides, they suggested that all the SAARC nations should come forward to prevent the crime forming a regional cooperation body. Media can play a significant role in checking the crime through publishing reports on the issue.
