Homes at Ashrayan Project become dilapidated, need urgent repair

NILPHAMARI, Feb 24: Homes at Ashrawan project built for the homeless hardcore poor people of Kishorganj upazila in Nilphamari district are now in a dilapidated condition.

The national project was undertaken by the government to provide shelter to the homeless and distressed ultra poor people and in Kishorganj upazila the project is located in Bahagili union parishad (UP).

The project was built 25 years back in 1996. Since that time the homes were not repaired.

Bahagili UP shelter project comprises 80 homes for 80 families which were built under the supervision of the army. But since then the project remained uncared for. In all the homes doors, windows and roof have been broken and become unusable. Now polyethine and some other devise are being used to cover the broken area.

Initially there was the allotment of 8 toilets for 10 families to be used but those toilets are now broken and unusable. Moreover, it has become difficult to keep the domestic animals inside project. Some residents claim that they are also deprived of Social Safety Net coverage of the government such as VGF, VGD, widow and old age allowance and so on.

While contacted, president of the project residents Motiar Rahman said there was no repairing works of the home of the project for more than 25 years. Upazila administration sources said they are waiting for government allotment of fund for repairing the houses.
