NILPHAMARI, Jan 3:  Technology for harvesting honey by utilising bee-keeping boxes is becoming popular in Nilphamari district. As the mustard plants blossomed with yellow colours, the bee farmers are putting boxes near the mustard farmland where the bees make beehives to gather honey there.

Encouraged by some NGOs hundreds of bee farmers are engaged in this agro-sector across six upazills of the district.

Sources said a bee farmer use 50 to 100 boxes to cultivate honey by using the technology. A bee farmer generally collects 200 to 300 kg honey in the season to earn Tk 50000 to 80000.

Most of the bee farmers sell their collected honey to CARE, RDRS and other NGOs including BSCIC as they are directly employed by those organisations. The individuals who collect honey at their own initiative sell the coveted commodity by hawking from door to door.

Sources added the price of honey now prevailing in the markets is around Tk 400 to 500 per kg.
