RAJSHAHI, Jun 29: Failing to obtain any monetary gain from so-called 'Admission-Trade', ruling party-backed student wing 'Chhatra League' has become desperate in all government colleges in the city and were being engaged in confrontation with police and the authorities of the colleges.
On Saturday noon, cadres of Chhatra League tried to create influence at the Higher Secondary first year admission activities at Rajshahi City College and failing to reap any benefit there, they ransacked the chamber of Principal of the college, engaged in clashes with police in various places of the city. Failing to enrol students at the same college in a crooked way, the same cadres also stopped admission related activities there on Thursday as well.
According to sources, with the starting of Admission at various government colleges of the city in first year Higher Secondary classes, leaders of Chhatra League resorted to 'Admission Trade'. They engaged in attacking and ransacking in various colleges and thus created a chaotic situation there. Failing to admit students according to their choice, the same student cadres ransacked furniture on last Tuesday at Rajshahi College and on last Wednesday at New Degree Government College. Sources informed, failing to admit students at the party quota, the ruling party student cadres attacked and ransacked all three government colleges. Such unruly activities have also created panic among admission-seekers and their guardians.
Teachers engaged with admission activities informed, despite 'Tadbir' and pressure from the ruling party backed student leaders, they have been continuing the activities of admission according to admission rules. As a result, being angry, agitated Chhatra League leaders resorting to attack and ransacking and were trying to thwart the admission process.
It is learnt, this year a total of 19,885 students got GPA-5 in SSC examination from Rajshahi Education Board which is far greater than the number of last year. However, the number of seats for admission at the government colleges of the city has not been increased. The four government colleges of the city will admit only 4,200 students in the first year of which 1,200 each will be admitted in Rajshahi New Degree College, Rajshahi Mohila College and Rajshahi City College and only 600 students will be admitted at Rajshahi College. As a result, a huge number of admission seekers even with Golden GPA-5 score will fail to get admitted in the government colleges of the city.
Professor Habibur Rahman, Principal (in charge) of Rajshahi College in this connection said, much more meritorious students will get chance to be admitted if the government started double shifts in the colleges by increasing infrastructural facilities and by appointing teachers.
Professor Abdur Rouf Mia, Chairman of Rajshahi Education Board informed, as against total pass of 1,17,000 students in the SSC examinations, there are nearly two lakh seats in various colleges under the Board but every one wants to study in renowned colleges at the cities. As a result, crisis has been evolved.
