Initiative to boost bamboo production in hill tracts

BANDARBAN, June 30: The Bandarban Development Board has taken a project to boost the production of bamboo in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
Under this project, some 13,000 bamboo gardens will be raised in all three districts in the region.
State Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Bir Bahadur Ushising, MP, inaugurated the project by distributing bamboo saplings among farmers as the chief guest at the Bandarban Develop-ment Board office on Saturday.
Under the project, some 2.8 million bamboo saplings will be distributed among 420 families.
Presided over by Project Director Shahinur Islam, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Aslam Hossain, Superintendent of Police Zakir Hossain Majumdar and Project Director of Development Board Harunur Rashid spoke at the function, among others.
Speakers said bamboo production is declining in the region.
The initiative will help increase bamboo production.
It will also improve the socio-economic condition of the disadvantaged population.
