RANGPUR, July 31 (BSS): A notorious inter-district dacoit was killed in a gunfight with police near Veluar Bridge point on the Mithapukur-Fulbari regional highway under Mithapukur upazila here last night, police sources said.
The deceased dacoit has been identified as Alamgir Hossain, 37, son of Jobed Ali of village Fulchowki under Mithapukur upazila.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mithapukur Thana Rabiul Islam told BSS that an organised group of around 12 to 13 dacoits blocked the highway and snatched away a motorcycle from a person at gun point there.
Later, the dacoits were leaving the place when they faced patrolling police on their way and opened gunfire at the policemen when the later had to retaliate in self-defense.
Alamgir was killed on the spot, police recovered several blank cages of bullets shot by the dacoits and the body from the spot though the other dacoits managed to escape the scene.
Police has sent the body to Rangpur Medical College Hospital(RMCH) for conducting autopsy today and filed cases in connections with committing dacoity, murder, attacking police and obstructing police in conducting official duties with Mithapukur Thana.
"At least five dacoity cases have been pending against the deceased dacoit with Mithapukur and Badarganj Thanas in Rangpur and other police stations in Dinajpur district," the OC added.
Hectic efforts were on to nab the other absconding dacoits, he furthered.
