IU deptt students demand justice over teacher's murder

ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY, Apr 15 (IU): Students of the Social Welfare department at Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia on Wednesday held a protest rally demanding swift justice over the murder of their teacher, Assistant Professor Asma Sadia Runa.
The students raised four demands in the demonstration organised at noon, including justice through impartial investigation, the under-construction hall named after the late teacher, and prioritising teachers' recruitment. The protesters locked the administrative building and the main gate of their university as part of their protest and called it off upon a written assurance from the authorities.
The students carried placards and chanted slogans including 'We demand the killers be hung'. Students said they have not seen any visible progress as 41 days have passed after Assistant Professor Runa, who had been holding the position of chairperson, was killed. "For the past few months we have been informing the administration about all the problems in our department. We haven't seen any effective steps yet," they also said.
On March 4, Assistant Professor Runa was stabbed to death in her office in the university by Fazlur Rahman, an employee of the same department.
On March 5, her husband Imtiazur Sultan filed a case at the Islamic University Police Station, naming Fazlur as the main perpetrator and two other teachers and assistant registrar as accused.
Fazlur was sent to jail while the rest have not been arrested yet.
