JGF opposes setting up of Rooppur nuke plant

PABNA, Nov 5: Jatiya Gono Front, a left leaning forum launched campaign against Rooppur Nuke Plant, the much-talked about project in the country.
In a press conference held at the Pabna press club on Wednesday noon the leaders of the party demanded stoppage of the plant of solar power project for the sake of security. They announced a mass rally against the project to be held in Shahapur in Ishwardi upazila on Saturday.
In the keynote paper they alleged the proposed Rooppur nuke plant would be a major threat on lives and environment.
The prime minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the first phase work of the Rooppur nuclear power plant on October, 2 last year following a deal with Russia on November 2, 2011 under which Russia will build a two-unit plant at Rooppur for Bangladesh, each having the capacity of producing 1,000 megawatts of electricity.
"Our lives and environment would face a major threat if the proposed plant is installed in Rooppur," Tipu Bishas, coordinator of the party central unity told the journalists in the press conference.
