JOYPURHAT, Mar 10: The drumstick (Sajina) cultivators of the district are expecting a good yield this season.
Sub-assistance agriculture officer of DAE Azizur Rahman said more than 30,000 trees both in homestead and orchard in all the five upazilas have flowered massively predicting an excellent production.
He said it is a popular vegetable and farmers here grow it on commercial basis.
Farmers expect to harvest the crops from the next month if the weather conditions remain favourable, said farmer Anarul Islam of Pachuil village under Khetlal upazila.
In a recent visit, this correspondent found the farmers were spraying pesticide on the trees to make sure that no insects can affect the flowers.
Sources said a farmer can make over Tk 0.2 million from some 2,000 large trees if the price remain high during the harvesting period.
Deputy director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Sudhindranath Roy said, "We have provided all necessary support to the growers to make the programme a success."
He said sajina farming is profitable as it has a high demand across the country.
