Joypurhat peasants attain solvency through bean farming

JOYPURHAT, Dec 23: A good number of peasants of all the five upazilas of the district have attained financial solvency by cultivating bean on commercial basis.
Farmers' sources said the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) and Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) have been playing vital role for good production of the vegetable in the area.
In a recent visit this correspondent found each kg of bean is being sold at Tk 30 to Tk 40 in the retail market while the wholesale rate is Tk 25 to Tk 30. Growers are making a profit of Tk 5000 to Tk 6000 from the production of a decimal of land.
"I have cultivated bean on13 decimal of land spending Tk 2,600 this season," said farmer Altaf Hossain of Akkelpur upazila. He said he is making good profit this season.
Wholesaler Sajjad Hossain at Mahdupukur Haat said he purchases 20 sacks (each sack contains two maund) of bean from nearby Molamgari, Mohespur, Shibpur, Pachuil and Dobalpara area to send different kitchen market across the country.
Deputy Director of DAE Sudhindranath Roy said bean cultivation is gaining momentum across the district for high market price and demand.
