NILPHAMARI, Apr 26: Jute cultivation has started in Nilphamari district and is going on in full swing. Cultivation of jute decreased substantially in the district as the farmers are now cultivating Boro instead of jute.
Jute price fluctuates every year and the farmers do not get fair price of it. Not only that there is a scarcity of ponds to decompose the plants properly and process those to make fibre out of it.
On the other hand ribbon retting technology in which ribbons are kept under water of ditches to decompose those is still not adopted by the farmer.
DAE sources said this year's target of jute cultivation in the district is in 12770 hectares of land and production target is 134897 MT, out of which local variety to be cultivated in 1831 hectares of land to produce 14662 MT and Tossa variety to be cultivated in 10939 hectares of land to produce 119253MT. Sources added there are some other varieties of jute such as Mesta and Kenaf variety which are only sporadically cultivated by the farmers of the district.
