MAGURA, Apr 24: Jute cultivation is facing a setback in Magura as there is no rain in the district for about 4 months.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Magura said, they have taken a programme to bring 30913 hectares of land under jute cultivation in the district this year with an output target of 4,12000 bales of jute. A total of 25355 hectares of land has been brought under jute cultivation in the district till April 24. Rain is a must for the cultivation of jute. But there has been absolutely no rain in the district for about 4 months.
Farmers sources said, as there is no rain in the district they have to irrigate their jute field. But only solvent farmers are able to do so. The farmers who are unable to irrigate their land are now waiting for the blessing of rain. Moreover irrigation in the jute field is being hampered in the district due to severe power load shedding. Everyday they face load shedding of 7-8 hours. According to Power Development Board (PDB) Magura the supply of electricity in the district is 4.5 MW a day while the requirement is 6.5 MW.
When contacted Noab Ali, an official of Magura DAE said, jute cultivation in the district is facing a setback for want of rainfall. Jute production target may go unachieved in the district unless it rains soon.
