Jute price not satisfactory for growers in Nilphamari

NILPHAMARI Aug 12: New jute, the golden fibre, started to come in abundance in the markets across Nilphamari district.

Sources said the prevailing price of new jute in the markets is hovering between Tk 1200 to 1500 per maund according to its quality. However the farmers are unhappy with the existing price level as such they are waiting for the price to reach up to Tk 2000 per maund.

Sources said not a single jute mill of the country has yet started purchasing jute in the district and government purchase is also absent.

While contacted Abdur Rahman a jute grower of Itakhola UP of sadar upazila said he cultivated jute in 90 decimal of land and is expecting 20 maunds of production but his overall cultivation cost is Tk 16000 whereas he would get Tk 20000 in total if he sells those by now. He expressed dismay citing that jute cultivation and processing is very troublesome and costly and that the financial gain at the existing price is not encouraging at all.

DAE sources said this year's target of jute cultivation in the district is in 12770 hectares of land and production target is 134897 MT.
