Kalambo lemon cultivation gaining popularity in Narsingdi

NARSINGDI, Jun 4 (BSS): Kalambo lemon cultivation has gained popularity among the cultivators in the district due to economic prospect of the juicy fruit.

A number of farmers started small-scale cultivation of the lemon few years back on experimental basis in four upazilas of the district and achieved remarkable success. Their success encouraged many others to raise orchards of the juicy and special flavourful fruit.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) officials found that the climate and soil of the district are suitable for kalambo lemon cultivation after examining soil in the different upazilas.

Seeing the interest of the farmers, DAE has taken a programme to cultivate export quality lemon in four upazilas-Shibpur, Belabo, Monohardi and Raipura of the district.

Under the programme, a total of 50 new orchards of kalambo lemon being set up in the four upazilas and plantation of saplings have already been completed there.

DAE provided training to the growers on the cultivation and also supplied saplings to them. DAE also taken plan to supervise 50 old orchards in the same upazilas.

Beside, some farmers in different areas of the district raised a number of orchards in their own initiative and they are at present harvesting good quality lemon from their orchards.

Julhas Miah, a grower of Dattargoan village under Shibpur upazila has gained tremendous success. He planted 400 seedlings on 60 decimals of land and earned Taka 2,00000 from the garden this season.

Deputy Director of DAE Muksed Ali told that kalambo lemon has great demand in the local markets and other markets. Now this variety of lemon are exporting in abroad specially London.
