SYLHET, Aug 29: Patients are being deprived of medicare facilities for long at the Kulaura Upazila Health Complex of Moulvibazar district mainly due to shortage of medical officers and other support staff.
The 50-bed facility is the key point for medical treatment of about half a million people of the upazila as well as of the neighbouring Juri upazila.
Especially the poor, middle class and tea labourers of 50 tea gardens suffer much as the newly-established Juri Upazila Health Complex could not yet start their indoor facilities.
On the other hand, located on Beanibazar-Dhaka road, the hospital often has to provide treatment to the road accident victims. Normally about 400 patients visit the hospital everyday for treatment.
Only five physicians are at work on the hospital against the sanctioned 38 posts while the posts of medical officers for gynaecology, orthopaedics, paediatrics in addition to the posts of radiographer, X-Ray technician etc remained vacant for long.
Besides, there is no physician at any of the eight family welfare centres and five health and family welfare centres at union level.
On the other hand 26 posts of employees remained vacant on those for years.
The hospital was upgraded into a 50-bed complex in late nineties, but the facilities could not be reached to the upazila people properly as yet.
The X-ray machine had long been lying packed at the health complx while the therapy technician is there but no equipment for therapy has been supplied as yet. Taking the advantage, the private therapy centres are doing brisk business.
Due to the absence of surgeon and anesthetist, the expectant mothers are deprived of required treatment facility although there is a well-equipped operation theatre. This is why the expectant mothers are compelled to move to the private hospitals for costly treatment.
An official at the health complex said there has been no shortage of medicines, but we suffer mainly due to the shortage of physicians. Things had already been brought to the knowledge of higher authority time and again, he added.
