Lack of accommodation hinders police activity in Kotchandpur thana

JHENIDAH, Dec 11: Police activity in Kotchandpur Model Thana under Jhenidah district is being severely hampered for lack of a modern thana complex here.

The 100-year-old Kotchandpur original tin-shed thana buildings have turned dilapidated and risky. Cracks have developed on the walls; plasters are falling off, and rainwater seeps through the unpaved floors. Thus the infrastructure has turned unusable for the officers and the forces.

Though Kotchandpur thana was declared as a model thana years ago, it had yet to get any building under 101 dilapidated thana buildings construction project of Police department.

With the approval of police headquarter the old buildings have been left, and activities of the thana are now temporarily being conducted at the rented Kotchandpur community-cum-auditorium centre under Jhenidah Zila Parishad. Officers and forces are living together in an overcrowded room. As enough latrines are unavailable, they are forced to share them unbecomingly. A small bathing space is posing hazards to the law-enforcers in the community centre.

In the absence of a kitchen, food-stuffs are being cooked in a makeshift tin-shed room.

For lack of a record room important documents are being kept and related activities are being run in the common room of the auditorium with much inconvenience.

As there is no armory here, arms cannot be kept properly and for want of a goods room, recovered things are being kept in disorderly ways.

The lack of a planned room for female inmates is also causing a great trouble. The policemen are taking pains to bring drinking water from a distant tube-well as there is none nearby.

Above all, in the absence of a boundary wall of the rented building, additional manpower is engaged for ensuring security of things, said   Officer-in-Charge of Kotchandpur thana Shahidul Islam Sahin.

While contacted, Additional Police Super Md. Hasanuzzaman said that an L-shaped building would be constructed for the model thana on a piece of land settled for it near Kotchandpur Muktijoddha Complex.
