MAGURA, Feb 18: Nabaganga riverbed has been turned into a cropland. Poor landless farmers have started cultivating Boro in a vast area of the riverbed this season.
Magura DAE sources said about 2,000 landless cultivators are growing crops on the Nabaganga riverbed this year. Over 260 hectares of char land have been brought under the farming of Boro.
A good number of farmers said crop production is easy on riverbed. It reduces production cost. Moreover, growers achieve a good yield from the land.
Furkan Sheikh, a farmer of Nanduali village under Sadar upazila, said, "I have brought three bighas of land under Boro cultivation this year. Land of Nabaganga riverbed is fertile. I am expecting around 35 maunds of paddy."
"About 50 landless farmers in my village survive cultivating Boro paddy on Nabaganga riverbed", he added.
Farmer Bakarul Islam Barunatal village said paddy cultivation on riverbed generally assures a good yield. Around 3.0 tonnes of paddy yield can be achieved from a hectare of land.
DAE official Badrul Hasan said Nabaganga riverbed raises hope among the landless farmers of the area.
