Lemon cultivation gaining popularity in Bogura

BOGURA, Apr 29: Lemon cultivation is gaining popularity among the farmers of the district.
Lemon farming ensures a noticeable profit round the year. A good number of farmers have started growing the citrus fruit due to high profit, said Harun-or-Rashid of Adamdighi upazila.
He said lemon cultivation is easy and cheap than any other seasonal fruits and it grows round the year if the trees have been nurtured carefully.
Farmers can plant more than 300 saplings in each five decimals of land digging average 6 inches deep along with three feet distance. Besides, they need to spend Tk 3,000 to Tk 5,000 for the same amount of area for the farming of the fruit.
Each hali (four pieces) of indigenous lemon is being sold at Tk 15 to Tk 14 according quality and freshness in the local kitchen markets while Tk 10 to 12 in the wholesale markets. To grow a hali of fruits the peasants have to invest Tk 3.0 to Tk 5.0.
Assistance headmaster of Zianagar High School Nazrul Islam said commercial lemon production is on the rise in the district. He said he is also growing the fruit at his homestead garden and getting a good yield.
Deputy Director of the department of agriculture extension (DAE) Protul Chandra Sarker said weather and soil of the district are favourable for growing lemon. "We encourage the growers to expand the production for more profit", he added.
