TANGAIL, Mar 15: The historical memorial plaque of the Liberation war has been left neglected for long at Bhuapur upazila in Tangail district. The plaque was constructed during the war at Bhuapur Pilot High School premises in the upazila headquarters in order to preserve the memory of Abdul Kaddus, a martyr freedom fighter.
Abdul Kaddus, the brave freedom fighter was killed in a fight with the occupational Pakistani military forces in Bhuapur on October 23 in 1971 during the Liberation war. On the same day, legendary Freedom Fighter and Chief of Kaderia Bahini Abdul Kader Siddiqui laid the foundation stone of the memorial plaque there.
Kader Siddiqui had dared to build the memorial plaque in the name of a martyr freedom fighter even before the Independence and renamed the area as Kaddus Nagar as he was confident that the country would get independence soon. Bhuapur got freed from the occupational forces on December 8 while was freed on December 11.
After the Independence, construction works of the memorial plaque were completed on December 23, 1971, under the supervision of local freedom fighter and company commander Abdul Hakim.
Later, the plaque was reconstructed few metres away from its previous place after it subsided due to soil erosion.
The local freedom fighters claimed the plaque as the first constructed memorial plaque of the Liberation war in the country.
Anwarul Alam Shaheed, a freedom fighter of Kaderia Bahini, said the historical memorial plaque at Kaddus Nagar is on the verge of ruination like many other historical structures of the Liberation War. "A nation can't march forward without showing honour to its brave sons," he said.
This Correspondent while visiting the historical spot recently saw it was left in a worn-out condition. Moreover, no name plate of the martyr Abdul Kaddus was found on it.
Local people expressed their disappointment over the negligence to the historical memorial plaque of the Liberation war.
