Lightning strikes kill eight in four dists

At least eight people were killed in lightning strikes in Kushtia, Natore Sherpur and Habiganj districts on Tuesday, police said, report agencies.

In Kushtia, Jahangir Alam (45) and his 15-year-old daughter Julia, of Atigram area in Mirpur upazila, were injured by lightning strike while working on his land near his house Tuesday morning.

Locals rushed them to Mirpur upazila health complex where a physician declared Jahangir dead on arrival.

Later, Julia was shifted to Kushtia General Hospital as her condition worsened.

Ashraful Islam (40), a fisherman, was killed being hit by a thunderbolt while fishing in a waterbody in Moslempur of Bahirchar union of Bheramara upazila, said Mojibur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bheramara thana.

In Natore, a farmer was killed and another one was injured by lightning strike while working in a paddy field Tuesday morning.

The dead is Belal Miyaji (45), a resident of Bhavanipur village in Baraigram upazila.

Belal died on the spot while injured Selim (40) was admitted to a local private hospital, said Abu Siddique, officer-in-charge of Baraigram thana.

In Sherpur, Two people died after being hit by thunderbolts at two separate places in Nakla upazila of the district on Tuesday morning.

The dead are Rafiqul Islam (30), hailing from Hasonkhila area and Nazmul Haque (45), a resident of Rehar Char area in the upazila.

Local people said Rafiqul was struck by a thunderbolt in the morning while working in his paddy seedbed. He was taken to Nakla Upazila Health Complex where the duty doctor declared him dead.

Besides, Nazmul Haque was struck by another thunderbolt in Rehar Char area while going to catch fish in a local River during heavy downpour. He died on the spot.

In Habiganj, three people were killed in separate lightning strikes in Nabiganj and Chunarughat upazilas of the district on Tuesday.

The dead are Shafiqul Islam, hailed from Kaliarvanga village in Nabiganj upazila, Amar Biswas, an inhabitant at Chargaon village in the upazila, and Shahin Mia (17), a resident in Shaistaganj upazila.
