RAJSHAHI, Mar 29: Lilium, mainly a flower of the winter countries, is being cultivated in the Palashbari area along Kashiadanga-Kankanhat road under Godagari upazila in Rajshahi district. Chapainawabganj resident Hasan Al Sadi Palash and retired army officer Rabiul Hasan Zuberi are cultivating the flower in their mango orchards. Flower lovers from far and wide are flocking to see the lily every day due to its extraordinary beauty, eye-catching colour and sweet smell.
These fragrant flowers of white, yellow, red and purple colours spread fascination all over Rajshahi and can be cultivated commercially to earn a good profit, agricultural officials and growers say.
According to the authorities, in December last year, around 1,600 lilium flower seedlings were imported from the Netherlands and planted in Demers Garden, which were purchased at Tk 450 each.
This flower blooms mainly in late spring or early summer, but in Demers Gardens, the flowers bloom in abundance in the Bengali month of Chaitra as well. The flowers of this variety have six petals, which are quite wide. People mostly students from far and wide are flocking to see this beautiful flower every day.
Johnny Ahmed, who came from Niamatpur in Naogaon to see lilium flowers in Demers Garden, said that he saw the beauty of lilium flowers on the television. "I never thought that I could see this flower of a cold country in reality. I was impressed with the beauty of the flower," he said.
Md Shahzada Milon, who works in a private company, visited Demers Garden with his family recently. He said that he had heard about lilium flowers in the Demers Gardens before. "Today we have arrived and are enchanted by the smell of the lilium flowers," he added.
Sanjida Akhter, a paramedical student who came to visit with her family, said that all the flowers were beautiful while lilium was amazing.
Rabiul Hasan Zuberi, the owner of Demers Garden, said, "He cultivated tulip flowers in Rajshahi and in the northern region for the first time. After receiving a great response to this flower, we have for the first time cultivated Asiatic and Oriental varieties of the famous flower lilium from the Netherlands," he said.
Rabiul added that his flower garden had 1600 saplings of this flower while his aim to establish the garden was creating an environment for people to visit as there was hardly any flower park in the country so far.
He said that lilium was usually found in countries with winter atmosphere. "This flower can usually withstand a maximum temperature of 24 degrees. In the beginning, these flowers had to be grown quickly. After seeing some foreign farming methods, I made the soil suitable for lilium. Currently, we are able to cultivate this flower properly from all aspects," he said adding that the durability of flowers was decreasing due to hot temperature.
Maryam Ahmed, Godagari Upazila Agriculture Officer of Rajshahi, said that cultivating lilium was very promising in Rajshahi. "This year, the authorities have started cultivating it as part of the flower project in Demers Garden. Lilium is cultivated in the wooded area in their garden. The colour or growth of this flower is similar to that of a foreign country. As a result, if cultivated commercially, it will be possible to earn a good income from this flower," she said.
