Low-lying areas in parts of Sylhet go under water

Heavy rainfall, onrush of upstream water cause flash floods

SYLHET, May 29 (UNB): The low-lying and haor areas of 13 unions in Gowainghat upazila were inundated on Wednesday due to flash floods prompted by heavy rainfall and onrush of upstream water.

Salutikor-Gowainghat road went under water, snapping communication with Goainghat upazila headquarters.

Two points on Sarighat-Gowainghat road and Shimultola point of Gowainghat -Radhanagar-Jaglong road were also submerged.

Besides, hundreds of people were stranded in haor areas.

Rustampur, Lengura, Doubari, Nandirgaon union, East and West Alirgaon, West Jaflong areas also flooded. According to the sources at the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), the water of the Sari River was flowing above the danger level at Gowainghat point and at Sarighat point.

However, the local administration also asked people of the flood-hit areas to relocate to safer places with their belongings.

Touhidul Islam, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Gowainghat Upazila, said that already 56 shelter centres have been prepared in 13 unions and the people in risky areas have been asked to move to shelters.
