Low market prices disappoint summer tomato growers

JOYPURHAT, May 02: A good number of summer tomato growers across the district have been incurring heavy losses from last couple of week due to low market prices.

Ample production, absence of proper storage and transportation facilities are the main reasons for the price fall.

Farmers' sources said harvest of summer tomato generally starts from middle of April and continues till May.

In a recent visit this correspondent found each kg of tomato is being sold at Tk 20 to Tk 25 in the retail market while the wholesale rate is Tk 18 to Tk 20.

Traders from different districts have started visit the area to purchase the fruit direct from the cultivators.

Tomato growers of the district have urged the authority concerned to enhance proper storage facilities in the area. They also urged the government to monitor the market so that farmers can get fair price of their produce.

Deputy Director of the District Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Sudhindranath Roy said summer tomato farming is profitable. It has a high market demand.
