MAGURA, May 23: Low price of Boro paddy is frustrating Magura growers. Boro paddy is being sold in the local market at Tk 450 to Tk 480 per maund. The existing price does not even cover the production cost. During a visit to Jagla, Katakhlai, Kasundi and Isakhada bazar of the district many Boro growers were seen returning home with their unsold paddy as they were reluctant to sell it at present price.
Agriculture Extension Department (DAE) Magura informed, a total of 36350 hectares of land was brought under Boro cultivation in the district this season and 140050 tonnes of rice has been produced in the district. When contacted, Omar Faruque, a Boro farmer of village Isakhada under Magura sadar upazila said, paddy is being sold in the local market at Tk 450 to Tk 480 per maund while our production cost is 700 per maund.
Noim Mian, a Boro farmer of village Akshi said, present Boro paddy price in the market is disheartening. Government has decided to procure Boro paddy at 880 Tk per maund. If we were able to sell our paddy under the programme we could get profit.
Magura DAE official Noabul Alam admitted present price of Boro paddy in the local market is low. He added farmers will get fair price after the starting of food procurement drive
