Magura cultivators happy with good prices, ample mustard production

MAGURA, Feb 17: Bumper production and fair market prices are delighting Magura mustard growers as the harvest has started in full swing.
Farmers' sources said growers in all the upazilas of the district are getting a good production this season.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Magura, sources said some 12,590 hectares of land were brought under the cultivation of mustard this year with the production target of 1,3850 tonnes.
DAE officials said total harvest may complete within the current month.
Farmer Murtaza Akhter of Raygram village under Magura Sadar said he cultivated mustard on two bighas of land.
The grower said he achieved some 15 maunds of mustard.
"My production cost was some 12,000 and I am expecting to make a profit of Tk 30,000", he added.
Dabir Joarder of Kullia village under Magura Sadar said newly-harvested mustard is being sold at Tk 1,900 to Tk 2,000 per maund.
Besides, dry mustard is selling at Tk 2,500 to Tk 3,000 per maund.
The farmer said if the government expands incentive facility for the cultivators mustard farming will expand in a large scale.
DAE official Shohrab Hossein said repeated bumper yield encourages farming of the oil seed on the vast tract of land.
"We provide all necessary support to the growers to boost mustard cultivation in the area", he added.
