Magura farmers happy over onion production

MAGURA, Feb 22: Hybrid onion has raised hope among the farmers in Magura.
Newly harvested onion has started to come to the local market. Onion is being sold in the local market at Tk 24 per kg. Bumper production and reasonable price has turned the farmers happy.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Magura said, a total of 1670 hectares of land was brought under onion cultivation in the district this year. The upazila break up is 650 hectares in Magura Sadar Upazila while 420 hectares in Mohammadpur Upazila, 360 in Sreepur Upazila and 240 hectares in Shalikha Upazila. A bumper production has been achieved in the district this year which is 13,760 metric tonnes of onion.
When contacted, Rustam Ali, a farmer of village Jagdal under Magura Sadar Upazila said, "I have cultivated onion on 10 bighas of land. My production cost was Tk 1,20,000. I have got Tk 5,00,000 as profit from my onion."
When contacted, deputy director, DAE of Magura, said, onion farmers in the district are happy over bumper production and reasonable price. As we have ensured smooth supply of seeds and fertiliser among the farmers they felt convenient in cultivating onion. Moreover as the weather was favourable and onion farmers were provided with adequate training, a bumper production of onion has been achieved in the district this year.
