MAGURA, June 30: Magura farmers are losing interest in maize cultivation.
Maize cultivated land is decreasing day-by-day in Magura. Production cost of maize is increasing day-by-day while price of is on decrease.
Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Magura informed, about 200 hectares of land was brought under maize cultivation in the district this season as against 2300 hectares of land five years ago.
Topon Shaha, a maize farmer of village Jagla under Magura sadar upazila said, "Maize is now being sold in the local market at Tk 320 to Tk 350 per maund as against Tk 600 to Tk 650 last year. I cultivated maize in one bigha of my land this year. The present price does not cover my production cost. I have decided not to cultivate maize in the coming years."
Rouf Shikder, a farmer of village Fulbari under Magura sadar upazila said, "Earlier I cultivated maize. But now I do not cultivate it as I faced huge loss from it. Mainly maize is used in making poultry feed. But a good number of poultry farms have been closed within 5 years. Consequently the demand of maize has fallen in the market."
