Magura farmers overjoyed with bumper garlic yield

MAGURA, Apr 12: Magura farmers are overjoyed with a bumper production of garlic and its fair price.

Newly harvested garlic has started to appear in the market. Garlic is now being sold in the local market at Tk 60 to Tk 65 per kg in the retail market while farmers are selling it at Tk 45 to Tk 50 per kg to the wholesalers.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Magura said, a total of 890 hectares of land was brought under garlic cultivation in the district this year.

Hatem Ali, a farmer of village Raninagar under Sreepur upazila of Magura said, 'I cultivated garlic in 2 bighas of land. I have earned Tk 45 thousand as profit from my production.'

Jabbar Sheikh, another farmer of village Gangnalia under Magura sadar Upazila said, this year. 'A bumper production of garlic has been achieved in the district this year. Moreover we are getting fair price of garlic. After heavy losses in rice and jute we now have a sigh of relief with garlic production.'

When contacted, Magura DAE deputy director Mokhlesur Rahaman said, favourable weather and smooth supply of seeds and fertiliser have facilitated the farmers to achieve a bumper production this year.
