MAGURA, July 25: Flower growers of Magura are losing about Tk 100 million (Tk 10 crore) due to incessant downpour.
It has been raining heavily in the district over two months. According to Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Magura, the total rainfall in the district from June 1 to July 24 was 960 mm. DAE also informed, a total of 150 hectares of land has been brought under flower cultivation in the district this season.
Due to heavy rainfall more than 100 hectares of flower land have already been damaged. The total loss of Magura flower farmer will stand at about Tk 100 million.
Amal Krishna, a flower farmer of village Jagdal under Magura sadar upazila said, "I cultivated flower in 4 bighas of land. I expected Tk 1 million as profit. But I have not gotten back even my investment money due to rainfall."
Another farmer Abu Taleb of village Jagla under under Magura sadar upazila said, "I took a loan of Tk 50,000 from an NGO to cultivate flower in my two bighas of land. But all my flowers have been damaged due to rainfall." On contact Magura DAE official Nowabul Alam admitted the incident.
He added farmers will lose more unless the weather improves.
