MAGURA, Dec 21: Magura carrot growers will lose Tk 25 million this year due to low price of it
During a visit to Gangnalia, Kathakhali, Moghi and Beroil bazar carrot was seen to be sold at Tk 2 per kg. Moreover, growers were seen to return home with unsold carrot for want of customers.
When contacted Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Magura said, a total of 825 hcetares of land was brought under carrot cultivation in the district this year. About 20550 metric tonnes of carrot will be produced in the district this year.
When contacted Abul Hossein, a carrot grower of village Nanduali under Magura Sadar Upazila said, "I have cultivated carrot in 4 bighas of my land this year. I got only Tk 2 thousand by selling my carrot while my investment was about Tk 15 thousand.
Latif Munshi, another farmer of village Nalidanga under Magura Sadar Upazila said, "I have cultivated carrot in 2 bighas of my land. But it is being sold in the market at Tk 2 per kg. In this situation I am not harvesting carrot because even transport cost for marketing it will not cover my production cost."
When contacted Magura DAE deputy director Mokhlesur Rahman said, supply of carrot in the market is much higher compared with the demand . Consequently farmers are not getting fair price of carrot.
