Magura growers overjoyed with bumper production of turmeric

MAGURA, Jan 6: A bumper production of turmeric and fair price have brought smile on the faces of Magura farmers.

Newly harvested turmeric has started to come to the local market. During a visit to Jagla, Kachundi, Akshi and Bashkuta bazar of Magura sadar upazila turmeric was seen to be sold at Tk 900 to 1000 per maund.

Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Magura, informed a total of 2500 hectares of land was brought under turmeric cultivation in the district this year. A bumper production of it has been achieved in the district amounts to 26050 mt.

When contacted a farmer of village Akshi under Magura  sadar upazila said he cultivated turmeric in 4 bighas of land.  He earned Tk about 0.15 Million by selling turmeric this year.

Another farmer Abdur Razzak of village Jagla under Magura sadar upazilla said, "We are selling turmeric at Tk 900 to 1000 per maund as against Tk 500 to 600 last year."  Such price will encourage the farmers to cultivate turmeric in future, he said.

On contact Magura DAE official Noabul Alam said, the soil of Magura is suitable for turmeric cultivation.
