MAGURA, Jan 31: Magura tomato growers are expecting good profit this season.
Farmers sources informed, a bumper production of tomato has been achieved in the district this season. Farmers are also getting fair price of tomato.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Magura sources informed, 65 hectares of land have been brought under tomato cultivation this season.
The total production will stand at 1300 tonnes.
Nazrul Mridha, a farmer of village Ramnagar under Magura Sadar upazila said, this year I have brought two bighas of land under tomato cultivation. In the meantime I have earned Tk 60,000. I am expecting more Tk 20,000 from my produce. My expenditure is about Tk 20,000. That means my profit will stand at Tk 60,000.
Ikmal Shekh, a farmer of village Harishpur under Shalikha upazila of Magura said, we can cultivate tomato when our land goes uncultivated. That is we can grow tomato as an additional crop. Number of tomato growers is increasing in our village every year.
A tomato wholesaler, Bossir Mandal of Dhaka Road area in Magura town said, at present every day we are sending tomato worth Tk 0.4 to 0.5 million to different parts of the country from Magura. Due to high demand of tomato in the market we purchase tomato going to the field paying cash.
Consequently tomato farmers are free from the cost of transport as well as exploitation of middlemen.
Magura DAE official Shohrab Hossen said, this year a bumper production of tomato has been achieved in the district due to favourable weather. At the same time farmers are getting fair price of tomato.
