Magura turmeric growers expect Tk 150m as profit

MAGURA, July 30: Magura turmeric growers are expecting a profit of about Tk 150 million (Tk 15 crore) profit.

Now turmeric is close to be harvested in the district. If the market price remains favourable turmeric growers of the district will earn about Tk 150 million.

Agriculture Extension Department (DAE), Magura informed, they took a scheme to bring 450 hectares of land under turmeric cultivation in the district this season. But cultivation of turmeric has exceeded the target.

The upazila wise break up of turmeric cultivation is 150 hectares in Magura sadar upazila while 130 in Sreepur upazila, 125 in Shalikha upazila and 115 hectares in Mohammadpur upazila.

When contacted,  Jalal Sheikh, a farmer of village Baroipara under Sreepur upazila said, he has cultivated turmeric in two bighas of land this season and expecting a bumper production of it. He expects to earn Tk 50,000 against his production cost of about Tk 9000.

Asaduzzaman, another turmeric farmer of village Ramnagar under Magura sadar upazila said, cultivation cost of turmeric is cheaper compared to paddy. Cultivation    cost of per bigha turmeric is Tk 4000 to 4500 against Tk 8000 to 9000 of paddy per bigha land.

On contact Magura DAE official Noabul Alam said, a bumper production of turmeric is going to be achieved in the district this season. "We have provided the growers of the district with quality seeds and proper training. Moreover, the weather was favourable. In this situation turmeric growers in the district are overjoyed with the hope of a bumper production."
