Maize farming brings more profit to Magura growers

MAGURA, May 04: Maize growers in the district are delighted as they achieved plenteous production this season.

Some farmers said, "We are happy over the present market price as well."

Good production and fair price have brought smile on their faces.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Magura, sources said maize was cultivated on 135 hectares of land in the district. So far, total production stands at 1,190 tonnes as the harvest has already been completed.

Mukter Hossein of Isakhada village under Sadar upazila he cultivated maize on two bighas of land and achieved some 65 maunds of maize.

The grower said, "I sold all of my produce at Tk 45,000. My production cost was Tk 20,000."

Golam Faruq of Sreerampur village said, "Maize farming is more profitable than wheat. I have decided to grow maize on more land next season."

Trader Amal Kuri in Puratan Bazar area of the district town said, "Earlier we collected maize from adjacent Jhenidah and Chudanga district. Now cultivators grow the item in this district."

He said commercial maize cultivation will bring more profit for the grassroots growers.

Magura DAE official Shohrab Hossein said maize production is expanding in the area. "The department provides incentive and arranges training programme to boost maize cultivation."
