Maize farming increases in Jamalpur

JAMALPUR, Jan 02 (BSS): Maize cultivation has been increasing gradually in the district due to excellent economic return from cultivating the crop in recent years.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said farmers cultivated maize on 10,194 hectares of land this year which is 1,547 hectares excess than the last year.
Farmers cultivated maize on 5,200 hectares of land in Dewanganj upazila, 350 hectares of land in Sadar, 1,050 hectares in Sarishabari, 450 hectares in Melandah, 1,320 hectares in Islampur, 800 hectares in Madarganj and 1,024 hectares of land in Bakshiganj upazila.
DAE official sources said most of the farmers cultivated Super Shine, Don-111, Kavery-50, Miracle, NK-40, pioneer, NH-7720, Specific and Uttaran-2 varieties maize in their fields.
Farmers in the char areas have cultivated maize on an extensive land as the soils of the areas are suitable for the maize cultivation.
Besides, farmers got fair price of maize last year which encouraged farmers to bring more land under the maize cultivation this year.
Deputy Director of DAE Md Aminul Islam said we are encouraging farmers to cultivate maize through various incentive programmes.
