NILPHAMARI, Mar 18: A bumper production of maize is expected in Nilphamari district this year as the farmers used Hybrid and HYV variety seeds.
Moreover, the weather was also very favourable and inputs like chemical fertiliser and insecticide were also easily available.
On the other hand, cultivation area of maize is increasing very rapidly in the district year on year as more and more Char (Shoal) lands are coming under maize farming.
Farmers are increasingly being inclined towards the cultivation of maize in shoal and river banks of 11 rivers of the district that are almost ecologically dead. Sources said production of maize in sandy shoals and river banks is very satisfactory.
Abdul Jalil of Sundarkhata UP of Dimla Upazila said he cultivated maize on two acres of land in the shoal area of Buri Teesta river and his maize plants have grown very excellently. He mentioned that he is expecting production of 30 maunds of maize per Bigha (30 decimal).
DAE sources said this year's target of maize cultivation in the district has been set at 6458 hectares of land with a production target of 46822 tonnes. Sources added that production target is set to surpass.
