Man gets life-term for raping university student in Khulna

KHULNA, Feb 28 (UNB): A tribunal in the district on Wednesday sentenced a man to life-term imprisonment for raping a university student in 2023.
Khulna Women and Children Repression Tribunal Judge Abdus Salam Khan found Rafi Islam, son of Mohammad Zahirul Islam of North Megh Senpara area of Dhaka's Kafrul, guilty of rape and jailed him for life.
The court also fined him Tk 50,000 each, in default, to suffer one more year in jail, said Advocate Farid Ahmed, public prosecutor (PP) at the court.
According to the prosecution, Rafi took the university student to a residential hotel in Sonadanga and raped her multiple times with false promise of marriage.
He also took her to Dhaka and violated her.
Later, the victim's family tried to resolve the issue upon discussion but failed. The accused refused to marry the victim.
A case was filed on January 08, 2023, following a complaint lodged by the victim.
On January 11 of the same year, Sonadanga police registered the case on the direction of the court.
Later on February 23, 2023, Sohel Rana, sub-inspector (SI) of Sonadanga police station, submitted a charge sheet against the accused.
