KISHOREGANJ, Mar 4 (UNB): A tribunal here on Wednesday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in Karimganj upazila back in 2002.
The condemned convict is Ujjal Kumar Sutradhar of Nayapara village in the upazila. The court also fined Ujjal, who was tried in absentia, Tk 50,000.
According to the prosecution, Moni Rani Modak was married off to Ujjal in 1998. However, Ujjal used to inflict physical and mental torture on Moni for dowry.
On July 10, 2002, he tortured his wife for Tk 0.2 million (2 lakh). At one stage, he strangulated her to death. However, Ujjal hanged the body in the bedroom to make it appear that she committed suicide. As the autopsy report suggested that the housewife was murdered, her brother Uttam Kumar Modak filed a case against Ujjal and his mother Gita Rani Sutradhar on July 21.
