Massive plan taken for Aus cultivation in Gopalganj

GOPALGANJ, July 09: The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in the district has taken a massive programme to cultivate Aus paddy (kharip-1) extensively in five upazilas of the district this year.
According to DAE sources, a total of 1,893 hectares of land have been brought into Aus paddy cultivation with a production target of 9,465 tonnes.
Tinu Ukil, 52, a farmer of Paikerdanga village under Sadar upazila, said he cultivated Aus paddy on two acres of land (kharip-1) at a cost of Tk 65,000.
He expects that he will get about 100 maunds of paddy which market price is now Tk 120,000.
Mafroza Akther, Upazila Agriculture Officer (UAO), Gopalganj, told the FE that Aus paddy (kharip-1) is a good seasonal crop for farmers in this region. It requires a short duration of 100-110 days.
He also said farmers would get 30 maunds of Aus paddy from one bigha (52 decimal) of land which market price is Tk 36,000.
Jamal Sarder, a farmer of Paikerdanga village under Sadar upazila, said he cultivated Aus paddy on 80 decimal. If the weather remains favourable, he will achieve about 48 maunds of Aus paddy worth Tk 58,000. Its production cost is Tk 30,000.
Md Mahbub Mattuber, sub-assistant agriculture officer (SAAO), Suktail union block no. 9 under Sadar upazila, told the FE that Aus paddy is very popular for farmers in this region. Besides this, Aus paddy is an extra seasonal crop with profitable.
Abdul Kadir Sarder, deputy director, Agriculture in Gopalganj, told the FE they supply fertilisers, pesticides, other necessary inputs to the farmers to make the Aus cultivation programme a success.
