Massive tree plantation to refresh ecological situation stressed

BOGRA, Aug 3: Speakers at the inaugural ceremony of a fruit, medicinal and wood tree fair-2015 have stressed on a massive tree plantation across the district to ensure a safer planet, maintaining ecology and biodiversity to minimise the climate change impacts here in the district Monday.

To mark the day, a colourful rally, participated by officials, students, teachers from different educational institutions, political leaders of all parties, elite and employees of the administration, DAE, Department of Forest, agriculture-related organisations, NGOs, nursery owners, farmers and concerned authority, was brought out from the fair and paraded through the main streets of the area.

The fair, jointly organised by the local administration, Department of Agriculture Extension and Social Forestry department, was presided over upazila nirbahi officer Shahed Pervez while the member of parliament Bogra- 3 seat advocate Nurul Islam Talukder formally inaugurated the fair and addressed the function as the chief guest.

Upazila vice chairman Shakhina Begum, municipality mayor Belal Hossain and agriculture officials participated in the inauguration function to make the proggramme a grand success and to encourage the farmers to plant more fruitful and wood trees in their homestead and gardens as trees are the best friend of human being.

The chief guest was addressing a launching ceremony of the 3-day Wood, Fruit and Medicinal Tree Fair the following day, jointly organised by the upazila administration, Department of Agriculture Extension and Social Forestry department in front of the agriculture office premises stressing on cutting down wooded trees discriminately by dishonest businessmen from the district.

On contact, Deputy Director of the DAE Chandi Das said, Natural disasters like super cyclones, Tsunamis, Sidr, earthquakes, bushfires and droughts are occurring due to the negative impacts of climate change, thus, threatening the habitats, environment overall ecology system.

"So, we all should come forward to implement tree plantation abundantly in the area as we have to take oxygen from the tree," he added.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Sufia Nazim said, "We have taken a massive programme on more wood, fruit and medicinal tree plantation across the district while the government of Bangladesh is trying to ensure a fresh and livable country in the world."

About 50 stalls have been set up in the fair by different organisations, nursery owners and entrepreneurs displaying saplings of over 90 varieties of 40 indigenous plants of fruit, timber and medicinal ones.
