Master plan for Mongla Port in process of implementation

KHULNA, Aug 26: The present government has taken up a master plan for Mongla Port to reach the Vision 2021. The port authority has taken initiative to reconstruct the Jetty No 3&4 lying incomplete for four decades. A joint venture company has shown interest to construct the two jetties to load and unload foreign and local ships through PPP (Public Private Partnership). Besides, programme has been taken to construct high multipurpose jetties No 10 and 11 in restricted area of the port to manage export and import goods. Mongla port authority proposed to build a four-lane road in Mongla-Dhaka highway after completing Mawa bridge to relieve overload of traffic.
Port sources said the present government has given priority for the development of Mongla port and the government has taken 8 development projects and 4 programmes at a cost of Tk. 5.51 billion. Of them 5 projects and 4 programmes have already been completed and 3 are under going.
According to the master plan to increase the navigability of Poshur Channel the dredging work at a cost Tk. 1.26 billion has been started. MPA Chairman Commodore HR Bhuiyan informed to local journalists in a press conference recently that the dredging work will be completed next month. He also said that the number of vessels is increasing day by day due to navigability and one thousand vessels will move each year when the vision of the government will be implemented. The port has earned its fame as a profitable organisation.
The MPA Chairman said that businessmen of Dhaka will be interested to use Mongla port when the Padma bridge will be completed and the distance of Dhaka-Mongla will be shortened than Dhaka-Chittagong.
