May Day observed in districts

KHULNA, May 3: The historic May Day was observed here in Khulna as elsewhere in the country with renewed pledge to uphold the rights of the working people.
In Khulna different political parties and its front organisations, journalists union and different other bodies observed the day through separate programmes which included rallies, symposium and discussion meetings and cultural functions.
In observance of the day, a discussion meet was held at Joint Labour Director's Office premises on Thursday where Additional Divisional Commissioner (General) Ashok Kumar Biswas addressed as chief guest.
Gopalganj
Our Gopalganj Correspondent reports: The historic May Day was observed here with renewed pledge to protect and uphold the fundamental rights of the working people on May 1 (Thursday).
On the occasion different political parties, trade unions and professional bodies organised elaborate programmes. The programme included rallies, processions, discussion meetings and cultural functions.
In the morning Gopalganj District Paribahan Sramik Union at Kuadanga organised a procession which paraded through the main roads of the city chanting slogans. A discussion meeting was held at office premises at Kuadanga.
Md. Saidur Rahman Basu, President, Gopalganj Motor Sramik Union presided over the meeting.
Pabna
Our Correspondent from Pabna reports: The historic May Day was observed in Pabna on Thursday. About 127 years ago, on this day workers of the Chicago Hay market shed their blood to establish their rights for an eight-hour working period.
To mark the day, different political parties, particularly labour wings of political parties, Bus Srsmik union, Truck Sramik union, Jatiya Sramik League, Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, Sramik Kolyan Federation, Imarat Nirman Sramik union, Bostra-Kormochari union, Hosiery Sramik union, Hotel Sramik union, Jonata BankSramik union, Pabna Press Club and non-government organisations organised separate programmes.
