Modern irrigation methods on the rise in Sylhet div


SYLHET, Mar 14: Use of modern irrigation methods is on the rise in Sylhet division, sources said.
Additional director of DAE, Sylhet divisional office, Md. Altabur Rahman said a good number of farmers have
started using modern irrigation system on their cropland.
Modern irrigation is a part of modern agriculture, he added.
During the current Boro season, a total of 31,510 irrigation equipments are being used in the division in addition to the use of traditional tools like done and others.
It includes, 6,065 are in Sylhet, 5,181 in Moulvibazar, 6,622 in Habiganj and 13,342 are in Sunamganj district.
Of the total, 155 are deep tubewells which cover 9,154 hectares of land, while 8240 shallow tubewells cover 52,958 hectares and 31,510 low lift pumps cover 263,908 hectares of cropfield.
On the other hand, 48,900 traditional and small modes of irrigation tools have been covering another 50,573 hectares of Boro land, the sources informed.
It may be stated that, a total of 481,341 hectares of land had already been brought under the Boro paddy farming in the four districts of the division against the previously set target of 467,513 hectares. It was over 460,000 hectares in the last year's Boro season.
The farming would rise further in this week as the transplantation period is about to end.
